Kostas ir Aura

Fifteen years old Kostas likes science – he wants to understand the fundamental principles of life and matter: how molecules can change, how atoms rearrange in order to form a new compound. Kostas wants to know exactly what each molecule or atom does in our bodies and in the environment, which surrounds us. However, due to autism spectrum disorder, he finds it difficult to manage his daily routines and the routines cause him a lot of anxiety; therefore, he needs help from other people throughout the day in order to cope with them. For example, Kostas cannot leave his home without a company of a person whom he trusts; consequently, he has extremely limited opportunities to gain social and other skills, which are required for an independent life.

We, parents of Kostas, have a very simple dream: we want to help him to become independent; and, at some point, we want to see him going out of his home without a fear to the nearest store, a bus stop, go out for a walk or travel independently without becoming overwhelmed. We do not know when, but we believe it will eventually happen; and that his dog companion – Aura - is instrumental in this journey.

We joined the project because we know that assistant dogs are successfully trained in order to help children under autism spectrum in other countries. The dogs are taught to recognize stress and anxiety, help children to calm down and handle stress; dogs can also push a help button in emergency situations, bring necessary equipment, accompany their owners to reduce anxiety in stressful environments. Being a part of this project for us means not only that out child can gain more independence and self-confidence, but also that more Lithuanian children will be able to get an assistant dog and so much needed support for them and their families.
